BEING-WITH reflects upon the role of textile artists and designers within the art world and society at large. The concept of the Being-With, the term coined by French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, refers to the idea that “I” does not come before “we” and that there is no existence without co-existence.

Selected works will remind us – either directly or with nuance – that the private vs public and nature vs civilization binaries are not opposing constructs but one and the same. Cloth can capture the makers’ embodied experiences, aiding us in the awareness of our humanity and interconnected existence.

Following the topics of this year’s conference entitled Community Ties, this exhibition will include works that are subjective in nature but are directed towards the world around us. The works will demonstrate the archival properties of cloth and other materials, establishing that the personal is political.
