Traditions Evolve:
Northern California Juried Online Exhibit - Call for Entry
All California fiber artists are invited to submit work to Traditions Evolve, an online juried exhibition sponsored by Northern California SDA hosted on the SDA website. Many of us learned our craft first as a traditional technique; sometimes our grandparents taught us; or we learned them in formal education or training programs; some of us studied books or watched YouTube. Regardless of where we first learned fiber techniques, our own variations developed with time and practice. Northern California SDA wants to see work that has evolved from a traditional fiber-art technique and now shows your own styles and concepts. Entries must use or be inspired by fiber techniques, fiber or textile materials, or fiber- or textile-like materials.
JUROR
We are honored to have Kira Dominguez Hultgren as our juror. Touching history using backstrap and floor looms and jumping into the future with the computerized Jacquard loom, Kira weaves with traditional materials–linen, wool, and cotton – as well as unconventional materials including climbing gym rope, fabric, D-rings, oak trim, zip ties, wood, and copper tubing. Her grandmother’s Punjabi suit, sari silk ribbon, and her own hair find their way into her work. The woven material becomes the fabric of identity: race, nation, color, technology, and cultural categorizations. Through her weavings she references her heritage and personal history.
