‘Loose Threads’ & ‘Beyond the Basics’ at FibreWorks Studio & Gallery
June 7, 2017
FibreWorks Studio & Gallery in Pender Harbour, British Columbia showcases a wide range of fiber arts—from basketry and paper-making, to dyeing and weaving, by local, national, and international artists—all within an inspiring collection of studio yurts. In honor of FibreWorks’ 10th anniversary, they have two special exhibitions this summer, both of which feature some amazing SDA members’ work. Below are some details—both on the shows, as well as of the artwork—for you to preview what you’ll discover at this amazing location. An August exhibition, Full Circle, will also feature many SDA BC members’ work.
Loose Threads – On display until June 11th, 2017
This exhibition features the work of artists who are all members of Sunshine Coast BC members of the Surface Design Association. To honor the 10th anniversary, all the work shown was made within the last ten years under the theme ‘Loose Threads’, and was interpreted in fiber, fabric, paper, basketry, wood, and/or mixed media.
Nell Burns received the SDA Award of Excellence for her piece, Sea Spicules Lamp, which was awarded by Yvonne Stowell, Director and Curator of FibreWorks, at the opening reception on May 6th, 2017.
The Sunshine Coast regional SDA group has been meeting monthly for 10 years, and try to hold at least one exhibition together every year. Having the opportunity to work with FibreWorks Studio & Gallery—with its unique collection of yurts in a beautiful rural area—is a wonderful chance for artists to connect with one another. SDA members featured in the exhibition include: Marie Barry, Nell Burns, Leslie Campbell, Connie Chapman, Penny Connell, Dorothy Cross, Pat Crucil, Anne Gregory, Jennifer Love, Lois MacArthur, Sharon Roye, Maureen Sugrue, and Patt Wilson.
Beyond the Basics – On display until July 23rd, 2017
The second exhibition is Beyond the Basics, featuring artists from Canada, United States, as well as Australia, and is juried by renowned basketry artist, Jackie Abrams. Since 1975, Abrams has been a prolific basketry artist–apprenticing the masters, exploring alternative materials, and pushing the medium forward. She has been in numerous international exhibitions, books, and teaches her craft throughout in workshops worldwide. In addition to the juried work in Beyond the Basics, a number of Abrams’ pieces will also be on display.
The opening reception for Beyond the Basics will be held on Saturday, June 17th from 2:00-4:00pm with a special congratulations to Jackie Abrams for all of her years of amazing work and help with the exhibition.
