Friday Fibers Roundup: Exhibiting Members

This week’s Friday Fibers Roundup features many exhibitions our wonderful members are featured in all over the country, as well as highlights of other important exhibits internationally.

1) SDA member Pamela Becker will have two of her closed coil forms included in this year’s CraftForms 2017. The exhibition runs through January 27th, 2018 at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA.

2) “A Pop-Up Alterations Shop Run by an Artist Considers the Cost of Labor” by Matt Stromberg spotlights the work of textile artist and activist Carole Frances Lung (co-juror of SDA’s Art of Labor exhibition) on Black Friday where she examined unseen networks of labor and capital in the garment industry (via Hyperallergic).

3) “Mending Gold” by SDA member Brooks Harris Stevens is a first person account of her personal and beautiful ongoing project Mending Gold. In it Stevens states, “I find value in not always taking the traditional route regarding my artwork as it is important to discover new ways of creating and pushing the traditional boundaries that have been taught regarding textiles” (via Hand-Eye Magazine).

4) The exhibition Cloth & Memory features 4 Hudson Valley artists who investigate how cloth retains, transmits, and resonates (with) memories. On display through January 27th, at the Howland Cultural Center (Beacon, NY) featured artists include: Mary McFerran, Mimi Czajka Graminski, Riva Weinstein, and Harriet Cherry Cheney, who received an SDA Grant to help with costs for the exhibition. .

5) SDA member Phan Barker is a featured artist in the unique invitational exhibition on Hawaii’s big island in the town of Hilo. Eclectic Diversity will be on display at the Wailoa Center until January 25th, 2018.

6) “A Tribute to Women Who Reinvent Themselves, in Two Wardrobes at the Met” by Judith Thurman looks at the various wardrobes and closets of famous women and their ambitions for distinction (via The New Yorker).

7) “Every Designer Should see the Smithsonian’s Illuminating Exhibit on Accessibility” by Anne Quito urges you to see physical limitations from a different lens, and how objects aid in these transformations (via Quartzy).

8) The Fabric Workshop and Museum presents Process and Practice, an Exhibition of Rarely Seen Artists’ Boxes. The exhibition features notes, sketches, tests, and models from over one hundred boxes, including those of such celebrated artists as Laurie Anderson, Chris Burden, Cai Guo-Qiang, and Kara Walker (via Hyperallergic).

9) SDA member Adrienne Sloane’s piece The Unraveling is part of the Fuller Craft Museum’s exhibition Threads of Resistance (on display through May 20th, 2018). There will also be a roundtable panel discussion on January 21st at 3:00pm on the role of needlework in affecting social change.

10) Art and a Cake had their writers name their “Top 5 Exhibitions of 2017.” Featured artists, themes, and exhibitions include: Kerry James Marshall, Kim Abeles, Shoshana Wayne, MOAH, women, immigrants, and the resistance.
