Outstanding Student Award Winners (Part III of III)

Closing out SDA’s Outstanding Students Award Winners is another top-notch gallery of student work featuring innovation within the field of fibers and textiles. All were nominated by the chair of their department, and will receive a certificate as well as a one-year membership to the Surface Design Association.


Hailey Bryant Tension, spandex, salt, thread, 4′ x4′ x3″. Undergraduate at University of the Arts.

Madeline Larson Duck on Water, wool, acid dye, woven, knotted, 24″ x 60″ x 3″. Undergraduate at University of Wisconsin, River Falls.

Tricia Boyle Untitled, wood, foam, dye, 48″ x 36″ x 36″. Graduate at Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Jennifer Silvey Falling, paper, wax, fabric, 17″ x 7″. Undergraduate at University of North Texas.

Austin Smith Repeat Print, 4 color repeat screenprint on fabric. 4′ x 15′ Undergraduate at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Alexis Boriboun Syringa Dress, handmade kozo, abaca paper, wire, natural dyes, 38″ x 14″ x 12″. Undergraduate at Idaho State University.

Kate Garman My kitchen, paper, tape, Sharpie, 7′ x 6′. Graduate at Tyler School of Art.

Caroline Borucki armadillidium vulgare 1, linen, aluminum, wrapping,  knotting, 44″ x 10″ x 9″. Graduate at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Rachel Snack The Sister Blankets Collection, cotton warp, alpaca and chenille weft, tabby weave structure in supplemental weft, 8″ x 9.5″ each. Graduate at Philadelphia University.

Mitzi Alexander Flowers for Vincent, collaged, paper, converted to digital image, manipulated and printed on canvas, hand embroidery, hand stitching, 24″ x 36″. Undergraduate at Iowa State University, Dept. of Art and Visual Culture Ames.

Erica Hess Untitled Blocks, carved walnut blocks based on drawings, used for block printing, 30 x 30″. Graduate at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Amelia Rennell Dazzle Camouflage, hand-drafted construction pattern, cotton and wool handwoven tapestry. Undergraduate at College for Creative Studies.

Rebekah Richardson Slow Ritual, woven cotton thread, makeup, video. Undergraduate at Appalachian State University.

Caleb McMurry Near Death’s Door, Xylene image transfer, handmade yucca paper, 8″ x 10″. Graduate at University of Missouri.

Anabel Nelson Grace Under Pressure, hand-dyed cotton, hemp blend textile, embroidery, 16.5″ x 62″. Undergraduate at University of North Georgia.
